One of the things that discourage me whenever I read comments or reviews of THE BIG SLEEP is the fact that no one ever makes mention of the beautiful heart-breaking acting job Elisha Cook, Jr. did as the little man who wouldn't betray the woman he loved (a woman decidedly unworthy of such love, as the movie clearly reveals) and who is killed by the murderer Bob Steele for refusing to cooperate with him, and all the while Humphrey Bogart's Marlowe is in the adjoining office unable to do a thing to prevent the murder because he isn't carrying a gun. There jest aint no justice, sometimes!
