Украинцы любят короткий метр

Antelm Vido has been working in Kiev as an attaché in the matter of cooperation in audiovisual sphere in the Embassy of France in Ukraine for 2 years. The project called “The shortest day of the shortie” is in Ukraine now!

-          Why did you join the “The shortest day”?

My desire to become a part of “The shortest day” is connected with the shortie in Ukraine and with the huge activity of Ukrainians in the sphere of short-length films. Feature films are shooting rarely, but there are a lot of potential young directors, who shoot fiction, documentary or animation films in short length. For example, in 2012 Marina Vroda got Palme d’Or in nomination “The best short-length film” for “Cross” .

-          What kind of films are you going to show?

My assistant has to come soon, let him decide, what kind of films will be shown. They will be chosen directly from the catalogue of our project.

-          What events will be demonstrated shorties in Ukraine within?

In general, within festivals. There are some festivals in Ukraine, in which programs are included short-length films.

  • General: festival “Molodost”(three competitional programs of short-length films – professional, student and Ukrainian, and also some non-competitive programs – classical and experimental), Odessa film festival (it is smaller, just for Ukrainian films).
  • Special: “Krok”(international festival of short-length animation films, one of the biggest in the Eastern Europe, takes place on board of a ship by turns in Ukraine and Russia),Docudays UA(festival of documentary films, in which program are also included shorties).

-          Is Ukrainian audience familiar with such format?

Such format is known due to all these festivals and, we can say, that Ukrainians like the short-length films. Concerning us, we can tell the following: French Institute in Ukraine regularly shoes short-length films, in April we organize “Long nights of the shorties”, that gain popularity and during 10 years they gather from 3 to 5 thousand people in 6th biggest cities in Ukraine.

-          What plans do you have for this year?

I leave all organizational questions to my successor. Last year we want to arrange a show in the great Kiev underground, but in terms of the legal regulation it will be too difficult… that’s why we adhered to classics: shows in cinemas, libraries, café of the French Institute in Ukraine and also online shows on our web site.

On the 21th of December International organization “CinemaHall” organizes shows of short-length films of “The shortest day of the short-length film” project in the range of Ukrainian cities (Kiev, Odessa, Lviv, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya).

Information in the nearest time will appear on the “CinemaHall” website.
